Raise the bar: How our 10th anniversary theme reflects Proxy's culture

When we sat down to choose a theme for our 10th anniversary, we weren't looking for a slogan. We wanted to choose something that was already true, a tenet that has been a through line for us since our very first installation project in 2016.

"Raise the Bar" fit almost immediately, because it describes how Proxy Retail has operated from the beginning. Ten years ago, we set out to prove that installation could be done better: more reliably, more professionally, and with more respect for the client's time and brand.

Every year since, the work has been the same, with one difference: The standard we measure ourselves against keeps moving up.

A bar is only useful if you keep moving it

A standard that never changes eventually becomes a ceiling. The projects we're proudest of rarely came from hitting a target we'd already set. They came from a crew, a project manager, or a client asking a simple question: "Could this be better?"

That habit is the core of our culture. Finishing a job on time and on budget is the baseline, not the achievement. The actual achievement is leaving a site better than the plan required, catching the problem before it becomes a change order, or finding a faster, cleaner way to do something we've done a thousand times.

Raising the bar isn't a campaign. It's what happens when people who care about the work stop treating "done" as the finish line.

It shows up in the small things

Culture rarely lives in mission statements. It lives in the details nobody asked for:

  • The installer who re-levels a fixture that technically passed inspection but didn't look right
  • The project manager who calls the client with bad news the moment it surfaces, instead of waiting for a better moment
  • The crew lead who walks the site one more time before sign-off, because the first walkthrough is for the checklist and the second is for the customer
  • The teammate who documents a workaround so the next crew in the next city doesn't have to rediscover it

None of these show up in a contract. All of them add up to the reputation we've built over a decade, and all of them come from people who hold themselves to a higher standard than anyone else is asking for.

Why we built a whole event around it

For our 2027 annual team meeting, we're turning the theme into something the whole company can take part in. The program is built around three ideas:

  1. The Bar Report: A look back at how far Proxy Retail has come, from the earliest projects to the multi-site rollouts we run today. Ten years of progress deserves a moment to be seen in full, and the people who made it happen deserve to see it, too.

  2. The Raise the Bar awards: Team members nominate their peers, which matters more than it might sound. The people best qualified to recognize great work are the ones standing next to it. Peer nominations mean recognition comes from the people who see the effort up close, not just from the top down.

  3. Breakout sessions on the next level: What does raising the bar look like operationally, culturally, and commercially? We'd rather answer that question together than hand down a response. The people in the field and in the office see different problems and different opportunities, and the best ideas tend to come from putting them in the same room.

What's next

A 10th anniversary is a natural moment to look back, but we're also interested in what comes after it. A few priorities will shape the next chapter of Proxy Retail:

Operational excellence at greater scale

As clients expand and rollouts grow, the systems behind our work have to keep pace. That means continued investment in documentation, training, and the communication infrastructure that keep quality consistent from the first site to the hundredth.

A culture that keeps compounding

The habits that got us here, from over-communication to ownership to pride in the finish, only last if we keep teaching and reinforcing them. As the team grows, protecting and passing on that culture is as important as any operational goal.

Deeper partnerships with the clients who raised the bar with us

The best projects we've done came from clients who pushed us. We want to keep building those long-term relationships, where trust, honesty, and follow-through matter more than any single bid.

A willingness to evolve with the industry

Retail is changing, with more connected fixtures, faster rollouts, and higher expectations around visibility and speed. Staying ahead means continuing to learn, adapt, and invest in the capabilities our clients will need next, not just the ones they need today.

The standard is the starting point

Ten years in, Proxy Retail has never settled for the industry standard. That's because we built the standard. But the point of building a standard is that someone eventually has to raise it, and we intend for that to be us.

To our clients, our partners, and every person who has put their name on a Proxy Retail project, thank you for the first 10 years. We're excited to collaborate with you on the next decade's worth of installations, nationwide rollouts, refreshes, experiential activations, and any other exciting projects that raise the bar in retail and other industries.
